Scrap the provisional system!
That's a cry heard every season from those who fail to fathom the long-term outlook for Winston Cup racing. They'd like to do away with the rule that awards provisional starting positions to seven drivers who fail to qualify for a race based on lap times.
Take only the fastest 43 cars, they say, and let the chips fall where they may.
But NASCAR is a business, not a meritocracy. From a business standpoint, the sanctioning body had better protect the interests of those who pay big money to sponsor full-time competitors in the series.
