TRINITY Mirror has confirmed it is to sell theDerry Journal and theNewsLetter in Belfast.
The decision, which follows months of speculation, comes as Trinity Mirror chief executive Sly Bailey has told staff the company will slash a total of 550 jobs.
TheDerry Journal stable also includes theDonegal Democrat and theDonegalPeople's Press. The pro-UnionistNewsletter is Ireland's oldest newspaper and was established in 1737, while theDerry Journal, which launched in 1772, is the secondoldest paper in the country. TheNewsletter has a weekly sister paper called theBelfast News, and leading agriculture newspaperFarming Life. TheDerry Journalgroup was acquired in 1998 by the Mirror Group of newspapers and changed ownershiponce again following the merger of the Mirror with Trinity in 1999.
Trinity Mirror said its moves would save [euro]35m in most business areas, including throughthe centralisation of finance, human resources and IT functions.
