The Philippine government is looking into intelligence reports that President Gloria Arroyo has been targeted for kidnapping or assassination as part of an alleged coup plot, a cabinet minister said.
Interior Secretary Jose Lina said in an interview with local ABS-CBN television "the assassination has been the subject of an intelligence report," with targets including the president and some other figures.
But he said the plot was not yet confirmed, remarking "these are intelligence reports that have to be continously validated, so as not to alarm the populace."
Lina was responding to rumours that renegade soldiers had planned to kidnap or kill Arroyo as part of their mutiny in the financial district of Manila last Sunday.
