Japanese automaker Nissan said it will work with controlling shareholder Renault SA of France to jointly develop eight types of engines by 2010 for new vehicle models.
Nissan Motor Co. will oversee the development of gasoline engines, while Renault will manage the development of diesel engines, said a Nissan spokeswoman.
"Both firms will focus on the areas they excel in," she said.
"By jointly developing engines, we believe we can cut development costs and hope for some synergy effects," she said.
