US and Mexican authorities have arrested some 240 suspects in an anti-drug sweep that they said has crippled a major Mexican-based drug cartel.
The sweep, code-named Operation Trifecta, capped a 19-month investigation targeting a Mexican drug cartel headed by Ismael Zambana Garcia.
"We believe this is a major and significant act," said US Attorney General John Ashcroft at a joint press conference, here along with drug czar John Walters and top FBI and DEA officials.
Six tonnes of cocaine, 24 tonnes of marijuana, 100 pounds of methamphetamines, and eight million dollars cash in drug proceeds were netted in the operation, Ashcroft said.
The cocaine was brought into Mexico from Colombia by sea, then smuggled aboard planes, trains and automobiles into the United States to distribution points in Los Angeles, Chicago and New York, Ashcroft said.
"From coast to coast, we have dismantled Zambada's operation in the United States," said Deputy Attorney General Larry Thompson, also at the event.
