IF ONE of these days you meet someone who speaks one-liners like "Are you talking to me?" or "I'll be back," chances are he would be from Marikina City.
This novel possibility may arise from the plan of the city to tap Hollywood in its efforts to promote the use English among its constituents.
Starting Aug. 16 to Dec. 13, on all Saturdays at 7 p.m., the city will provide free public viewing of English language movies in various public centers in the city.
Marikina hopes the movies will attract residents to the beauty of the English language and encourage those who are already speaking it to practice more.
"Gusto namin mapalagay sila sa paggamit ng Ingles, kaya mga pelikula ang gamit namin dahil natural ang dating. (We want them to feel at ease with using English. That's why we use movies, where speaking it is natural," said information officer Mina Luz Camenia.
