"WE are not asking for crumbs," Sen. Edgardo Angara said yesterday as he slammed the Senate ruling bloc for offering the little-known committee on urban planning, housing and resettlement to the opposition.
In fact, Angara claimed, before the Upper House adjourned on June 6, Senate President Franklin Drilon promised the chairmanships of at least four standing committees-blue ribbon, justice and human rights, education and energy-to the opposition. The energy committee was specifically offered to Sen. John Osmena, he added.
As he understood it, Angara said, "there will be a unity Senate" in exchange for these committees. "There will be no dispute over leadership."
He did not say if Drilon's offer was backed by the entire ruling bloc. In any case, he said, "I don't think I'm violating confidences (by divulging Drilon's pledge)."
On Wednesday, Sen. Francis Pangilinan said administration senators had yet to decide on the fate of the energy committee.
