JOSE Capistrano Jr. of the UAAP did the right thing. By turning down the request of PBA Commissioner Noli Eala to allow four UAAP players to play in the ongoing PBA Invitational, Capistrano was in effect actually serving national interest. His decisive no for an answer effectively torpedoed unfounded charges of unpatriotic stance against UAAP players absent in the PBA tournament.
Eala and his ilk must be reminded that as supposed leaders of the land, they should be the first to protect our youth from unscrupulous people out to manipulate them for their own selfish ends.
College players are our country's future. To unnecessarily expose them to a rigid schedule could lead to disastrous results. What could be more unpatriotic than that?
There is no doubt that Rich Alvarez and Wesley Gonzales of Ateneo, and James Yap and Paul Artadi of UE are valuable players for the national team competing in the PBA Invitational. They can win games, why not?
However, the four are presently playing in the UAAP championship, the nation's premier collegiate basketball tournament. The schedule there requires that all four of them play twice a week and practice five days a week. On top of that are classes that they need to attend to, not to mention quizzes and examinations that come their way from time to time.
