DON'T belittle the warning of Brig. Gen. Victor Corpus, the resigned military intelligence chief, that the "political crisis is far from over." Meaning, there would be more coup attempts. It was Corpus who correctly predicted to the day the failed coup attempt in Makati last Sunday. It was he who warned Malacanang and civil society of the impending coup.
I know people, especially politicians, have been laughing at Corpus' intelligence reports ever since he presented Rosebud and Ador Mawanay as sources and witnesses in the drug and secret bank account charges against Sen. Panfilo Lacson. But since he accurately knew of the Makati coup try, that proves he knows what he is talking about. In contrast, many of the top armed forces generals and politicians pooh-poohed the reports of troop movements and an impending coup and were caught flatfooted.
You will note that I keep referring to the Makati adventure as a "coup attempt" and not a "mutiny" as many are now calling it.
I think it was really an attempted coup, an attempt to depose President Macapagal-Arroyo and take over the government. That was what the rebels were demanding in the beginning-for GMA to step down. It was only later, when it was obvious that the putsch was going to fail, that the rebels insisted on calling their caper a "mutiny" which has a lesser offense than a "coup."
When they admitted media into Oakwood for interviews, one of the first things that the rebel leader, Lt. (s.g.) Antonio Trillanes IV, kept emphasizing was that "first of all, this is not a coup. It is a mutiny." Most likely, this (mutiny) was Plan B in the event Plan A (coup) failed. There are reports saying that the rebels already had a plan for a "junta," with some opposition legislators as members.
