(From Philippine Daily Inquirer)
OZAMIZ CITY-The local government here has employed the services of former drug peddlers to spy on their erstwhile colleagues as a one-month ultimatum to end trading of illicit drugs in this city enters its second week.
Mayor Reynaldo Parojinog Sr. disclosed that former drug peddlers were used because they are in the best position to watch over the activities of existing drug peddlers.
Most of them, he said, have voluntarily given up their illegal drug businesses since the local government issued the ultimatum against drug traders. They are serving the anti-drug campaign on a voluntary basis.
He added that the former drug pushers are regularly updating authorities on the activities of the peddlers, primarily if they have indeed taken steps to stop vending illicit drugs.
Parojinog declared the ultimatum on July 21 as a last "diplomatic straw" his leadership is offering drug peddlers to put an end to their illegal trade.
Police intelligence sources disclosed that there is a marked decline in retailing activities of illegal drugs particularly shabu since the ultimatum was declared, attributing it to the "toning down of selling operations."
