THE SEPARATIST Moro Islamic Liberation Front yesterday denied a government statement that formal peace talks would resume in Kuala Lumpur this weekend, or Monday at the latest, saying they had not been informed of it by the Malaysian government.
Ebrahim Murad, the MILF's chief negotiator, said the rebel group has yet to be told of the date and venue of the talks by Malaysia which is acting as the third-party mediator.
Earlier, Foreign Affairs Secretary Blas Ople said the talks could open as early as Saturday while Malaysian Ambassador Mohamed Taufik said he had been informed by Eduardo Ermita, the chief government negotiator, that the talks would start on Monday.
Murad said the resumption of the peace talks was inevitable because Malaysia was very eager to mediate.
