LOSE the macho image.
The government yesterday urged Filipino men to help control the country's burgeoning population by controlling their sexual behavior.
The Commission on Population (Popcom) said the Filipino male's penchant for proving his masculinity by siring many children contributes to the unplanned pregnancies of women.
Four out of 10 pregnancies in the Philippines are unplanned, and one of these ends in abortion, which is "unsafe and often fatal," said Popcom Executive Director Tomas Osias.
Osias said nine percent of the country's 10 million married women want to space their childbirths while 11 percent do not want to bear more children, but they do not practice any family planning methods.
