THE GOVERNMENT yesterday asked the Supreme Court to make "final and executory" its landmark decision on the $682 million Marcos Swiss deposits held in escrow at the Philippine National Bank.
The Solicitor General also asked the high court to issue a "writ of execution" to enforce its July 15 ruling which forfeited the money, part of the ill-gotten wealth of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos, in favor of the government.
Compelling circumstances
Citing relevant provisions of the Rules of Court, Solicitor General Alfredo Benipayo said the SC can already declare its decision as final and executory even if the Marcoses were to appeal it, because of the "compelling'' circumstances-the length of time that the case has been pending and the public interest involved.
"Owing to the far-reaching historical and political implications of this case, the public interest as well as the urgency involved in this case is unquestionable,'' Benipayo said.
