CRITICS had ridiculed retired Armed Forces Chief of Staff Lisandro Abadia when he aired a warning about restiveness in the military last year. To them, Abadia can only say now, with a deep sense of sorrow: I told you so.
Early last November, Abadia talked to the Inquirer and said that the government should take coup threats seriously because of various issues roiling the armed services.
For sounding the alarm, Abadia, who served as military chief under the Aquino and Ramos administrations, was savaged by members of the military establishment, members of the House and Senate, the Catholic Church, and Malacanang.
In two interviews after the July 27 Oakwood mutiny, Abadia recalled that after his warning was published, he was called to lunch with President Macapagal-Arroyo and Executive Secretary Alberto Romulo in Malacanang.
"When I talked with the President and Secretary Romulo last November, these were the same issues that were relayed to me: disparity in pay, graft and corruption, leadership style of (Defense) Secretary (Angelo) Reyes, and favoritism in assignments, etc,'' Abadia said.
