BORONGAN, Eastern Samar-"No to mining, yes to Samar Island Natural Park!"
This was the resounding stand of the people of Eastern Samar as echoed by their leaders and representatives of the local and provincial governments, the Church and non-governmental organizations during a symposium held at the Bishop's House on Tuesday.
Borongan Bishop Leonardo Medroso initiated the dialogue in coordination with the Samar Island Biodiversity Projects (SIBP). Among the participants was Mines and Geosciences Bureau regional director Loreto Alburo.
During the dialogue, about 70 persons belonging to different sectors agreed to formulate three separate resolutions, which will be forwarded to the House of Representatives, the Senate, and President Macapagal-Arroyo.
The resolutions would be drafted by a core group headed by Msgr. Lope Robredillo, Vicar general of the Diocese, in time for the anti-mining protest caravan scheduled on Aug. 8.
