Cooperative societies are to be used to start banks for women in Tanzania.

Dr Asha-Rose Migiro, the minister for Community Development, Gender and Children, told Parliament in Dodoma this week that a Cabinet paper was ready and would soon be sent to President Benjamin Mkapa for approval.

Tanzanian women are more marginalised by the country's 28 commercial banks than men.

The 8,000-plus savings and credit cooperative societies conduct most of Tanzania's financial services.
