US welcomes release of Sao Tome ministers.

The United States welcomed the release of all Sao Tome and Principe government ministers held by military leaders who ousted President Fradique de Menezes last week in a bloodless coup but called for full restoration of the elected government.

"We are pleased that all of the 14 people taken hostage last week have now been released," deputy State Department spokesman Philip Reeker said after the remaining eight of 14 people taken prisoner were released.

"We continue to urge a peaceful, nonviolent resolution in Sao Tome, including allowing the elected government to continue to function," he told reporters.
