The main end use for ammonium nitrate is in fertilizers, with the other application being explosives. In 2001, western European consumption amounted to 15.1 M tonnes (in terms of nitrogen content) and this fell in 2002 to 14.8 M tonnes. In central Europe, demand has been reasonably level at 6.8 M tonnes, according to Nexant Chem Systems. Production in western Europe has fallen from 12.5 M tonnes to 11.8 M tonnes and that in central Europe has remained at around 6.1 M tonnes.
