Editor's note: The following story appeared in the December 1947 issue of The Navy Supply Corps Newsletter. Then LCDR Wheeler eventually rose to the rank of vice admiral in the Supply Corps and retired in 1974. He served as Chief of Supply Corps from 1970 to 1973. See a tribute to VADM Wheeler that appeared in the June/July/August 2002 issue of the Newsletter (www.navsup.navy.mil, select News).
This is a story based on actual incidents.
