Few ships in the United States Navy are ever honored by a visit from the United States Ambassador of the country they are visiting. Rarer still are the opportunities a Military Sealift Command ship has to be honored by such a visit.

During USNS Spica's (T-AFS 9) New Year's visit to Koper, Slovenia; the ship had the distinct honor of being visited by the United States Ambassador to Slovenia Johnny Young. Spica, commanded by the ship's Master William Wiggins, and who's Military Department is headed by the Officer in Charge, CDR Jim Shields hosted the Ambassador and his official party for a day long visit.

The Ambassador and his staff were served lunch in the Wardroom. During the meal, Spica's recent accomplishments were discussed, as well as various details of the ship that would be highlighted during the tour. Ambassador Young shared stories from his tenure in Slovenia and his many postings around the world.

After lunch, the official party first visited Spica's flight deck to view the Puma helicopters used by Spica for vertical replenishments. The Puma's are operated by GEO SEIS, a military subcontractor working with Military Sealift Command.

Two Puma's and seven personnel replace two CH-46's and 28 military personnel. Dick Good, OIC of the Puma Det, explained the many facets of aviation support necessary during replenishment at sea.
