ROTA, Spain (NNS) -- In an effort to add to the outpouring of support for service members injured during Operation Iraqi Freedom, the Navy Exchange worked in conjunction with its vendor partners to provide clothing, supplies and entertainment for the injured at Fleet Hospital (FH) 8.
"There have been people at the forefront of all this," said Gerald Outar, NEX general manager, "the Navy and Marine Corps Relief Society, the American Red Cross, and people in the Naval Station Rota community, that from day one, have been there to take care of these service members."
Besides their other job duties, Outar and Roxanna Carrillo, NEX customer relations specialist, have been coordinating with the NEX headquarters in Norfolk, Va., working with their uniform support center in Pensacola, Fla., and teaming up with the American Red Cross, the Navy Marine Corps Relief Society, and Rota's Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) department to ensure the needs of the injured are addressed.
The NEX initiative began when a member of the American Red Cross called Carrillo to determine whether or not the NEX would be prepared for the Red Cross' upcoming purchases.
"The Red Cross let me know what their needs were, and that they were giving out toiletry kits," said Carrillo. "They let me know what they were doing as far as support. In return, they let us know what they needed from us, and we worked with them."
