Addressing the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defence Committee, Lieutenant-General Moshe Ya'alon, the chief of staff, said that the liquidation of Nidal Salam was undertaken after information was received on his plan to carry out an attack in a Qatif Bloc settlement in the immediate future, and there was no alternative but to thwart it. The chief of staff rejected criticism from several Knesset members who said that carrying out a targeted killing on the very day Abu-Mazin was forming his government was inappropriate. Yosi Sarid was one of the critics:
