Council leader Roger Blackmore has spared New Parks Leisure Centre, which was set to be bulldozed to make way for housing.

The centre had been proposed for possible sale and demolition for redevelopment under a report prepared by cultural services director Tot Brill.

Ms Brill has proposed a range of options to save GBP38.5 million from leisure services, including fewer but better services.

The news caused an outcry in New Parks, one of the city's most deprived estates, as the leisure centre is one of the hubs of local life.
