PRESUMING THAT readers are usually attracted only to autobiographies of people they admire or are interested in, John Baxter was wise or well-advised to focus his handsome and immensely readable new book on the central activity of his life: book-collecting. He has done other things, and so successfully that they've apparently financed his collecting activities, but he makes very little of them here. They've got him to places where he can collect more books.
