PRESUMING THAT readers are usually attracted only to autobiographies of people they admire or are interested in, John Baxter was wise or well-advised to focus his handsome and immensely readable new book on the central activity of his life: book-collecting. He has done other things, and so successfully that they've apparently financed his collecting activities, but he makes very little of them here.
