It was one of the times my parents left me at Brooklyn. I was five and Grandpa took me out for my birthday in his runabout to yank in unwilling blue swimmers. That was the first time I saw it. As I hauled in a crab trap, a bow wave churned the waters and plankton flashed and glowed blue, silver and green, alive in falling foam, cold lights rising from the interior of rocks, sliding down rocks and edges into vast black black black hollows, plunging away from the moon and stars. I gasped, looking up, feeling that because I loved these magical threads of light so much, the velvety blackness was for me, that I would find their secrets. It came to me like a dream.
