AT THE END of the nineteenth century, Australia went through a boom-and-bust cycle followed by drought. A century later the pattern is repeating itself. The present dryness has focused attention once again on inland Australia. We now see it as a place of environmental damage and chronic water problems, in contrast to earlier generations, who saw it in a more romantic guise.
