SIR: In his letter (May 2003) Andrew McIntyre castigates me severely for my article "Solving the Problem of Meaninglessness" (March 2003). According to Mr McIntyre my analysis of our contemporary situation is "negative", "despairing", "full of self-loathing", "fearful" and (worst of all) "Christian". Allegedly determined to opt for despair and pessimism in the face of all the evidence, I am apparently really not much better than the Greens, the anti-globalisers, and all those other self-hating Westerners who hoped for an American disaster in Iraq.
It is quite an indictment but I am afraid Mr McIntyre does me too much credit. Cultural despair and marching for Saddam are not really my cup of tea. The emphasis Mr McIntyre places on my being a Catholic puzzles me slightly, unless he finds it a good reason to disregard an inconvenient argument. And Mr McIntyre is quite in error if he thinks that being a Catholic leads to a pessimistic view of life and hostility to the modern world. ...
