Wisconsin resident Pedro Cruz has broken his back twice. For about a year he has used an electric wheelchair to get around. He and wife Karin Mendez-Cruz regularly walk their large dogs, preferring to do so alone to avoid frightening other persons or pets.
On June 2nd, they were walking the dogs along the Root River in Island Park when Mr. Cruz tried to turn his wheelchair around. It tipped over, dragging him down into the river.
Three teens who work for Milwaukee-based A&G Abatement LLC were doing cleanup and repair work on the nearby Island Park pavilion when they heard Mrs. Mendez-Cruz scream, "He's drowning, he's drowning!" William Paulson, 18, Michael Rieckhoff, 19, and Tyler Gustin, 19, stopped working and ran to the scene. Tyler later told the Racine Journal Times that they did not have time to think; they just acted. "Me, Mike and Billy, we just went into the water," he said.
One of the young men held Mr. Cruz's head above water while the others struggled to unbuckle him from the heavy chair. They then pulled him from the river to safety.
Mr. Cruz suffered only minor injuries, but felt sick the next morning, so checked himself into a hospital. Doctors speculated ...
