Before too much praise gets heaped on NASCAR for its move to common templates, perhaps we should try to figure out why one car make has assumed such a dominant position in Winston Cup.

The 2003 season is nearly half-over, and Chevrolet drivers already have won eight races and nine pole positions, the latter despite Ryan Newman's clear-cut qualifying superiority in a Dodge. Six Chevrolet teams are among the top 10, and several Chevy drivers who were also-rans last year have made dramatic improvements in the standings since this time last year.
