The real winners in the latest version of NBA draft night were the aging patriarch of the Cleveland Cavaliers, his jovial new coach and the 2.9 million folks in the metro Cleveland area. So it was that Gordon Gund (the patriarch) and Paul Silas (the coach), after making official their first selection, spoke glowingly about the future of the Cavaliers, in the person of superstar LeBron James.

James arrived at the Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York dressed in white, head-to-toe, like a blushing bride. Fitting, because draft night was not so much a coronation as it was a marriage of James, the NBA and millions of Northern Ohioans.
