Heaven turns 15 this week.

No, not that heaven.

Baseball heaven--at least as it is defined by the more than 800,000 visitors making the pilgrimage to a corn field in Iowa simply because of a movie. Not just any movie--Field of Dreams.

It was 15 years ago this weekend that Hollywood producers broke ground, plowing under the corn overlapping the property lines of Don Lansing and Al Ameskamp, creating a movie set and leaving behind a baseball field.

The field is 3 miles outside of Dyersville, Iowa, which the Chamber of Commerce touts as the Farm Toy Capital of the World, although no one would mind if you also think of their town as a little slice of heaven. That's where they built it, but did they realize people really would come?

Because people come. People most definitely come. They come to play catch, to play in a pick-up game, to walk among the stalks of corn and to re-create the magic in a film that makes women swoon and men cry.

Nearly a year after the field was built, the movie, starring Kevin Costner as farmer Ray Kinsella, debuted to mixed reviews. Less than two weeks later, the first visitor found the field. Lansing, whose white farmhouse was used for the interior scenes, remembers it well. He says the guy, wearing a New York Giants cap, was on his way west to see his beloved team play and told Lansing he just had to see the field before it was turned back into corn.
