Hong Kong Legislative Councillor and former chairman of the Democratic Party Martin Lee has described the deferral of the Security Bill as "a triumph for democracy", Radio Australia reported. Lee told an interviewer for the radio's "Asia-Pacific" programme:

"It shows that when the people have spoken, the government finally had to listen. It augurs well for Hong Kong, but it also, I think, gives Beijing a very clear message that the Hong Kong people support one country, two systems, but on the basis that Beijing will not interfere.
