One of the more anticipated new family sedans is the car on our cover: The Mazda6, successor to the aging 626. We had originally planned to include it in our test of family sedans in January, but it wasn't on sale in time. We've since tested two versions--a four-cylinder and a V6--and they've both scored close to the class leaders, the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, and Volkswagen Passat (see page 36).
You'll find more details on the Mazda6 in the new-car profiles (beginning on page 38), and we'll publish a full road-test report next month. Here's a quick first look.
The well-equipped Mazda6 i Four rang in at $21,650. Our V6 Mazda6 s cost $25,925, with upgraded audio and a sports package that includes 17-inch wheels, halogen fog lights, and extra trim.
Mazda has designed the 6 to be sportier than the pedestrian 626. We found that handling is responsive and fairly agile, balanced and secure at the limits. A wide (41 foot) turning circle, however, hinders maneuverability. The ride is firm and controlled, yet fairly comfortable. Braking is excellent.
