SAFETY SEATS
The May report on child car seats said that parents should use a convertible seat in the rear-facing position for infants, forward-facing when the child is 1 year old and at least 20 pounds. This does not emphasize the recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics and others: A child should remain rear-facing until reaching the maximum weight for the safety seat, as long as the top of the head is below the top of the seatback.

We generally agree with the American Academy of Pediatrics. But it's also important for parents to monitor the baby's growth so they can gauge when the maximum weight and height for the seat have been reached, following the manufacturer's instructions. And parents need to ensure that the seat's harness always fits properly.
JARGON TO THE LEFT OF ME!
In the May report on scanners, you said that the term TWAIN was not an acronym but "a sardonic reference to the incompatibility that once plagued computers." I always thought TWAIN stood for "Technology Without An Interesting Name."
