If you stack the cards--or in this case the dishes--in your favor, almost all new dishwashers will remove grit, grease, and residue from even the dirtiest dishes. When we tested 32 models priced from $215 to $1,375, all but 6 did an excellent job of transforming a full load of plates, glasses, and flatware from grimy to gleaming.
That's partly because we did two key things right: We loaded the dishes properly, and we used a detergent containing enzymes. (See "Loading Zone" on page 36 and "The Dish on Detergents" on page 39 for specific advice.) Those two steps are more important than pricey features in getting the best results from a dishwasher.
