The May l issue of Women's Wear Daily focused on college campuses and included a ranking of schools, in which brand name clothing counted more than degree programs.

Sophisticated taste in student clothing and quality fashion and retail programs were the announced criterion, but was it coincidental that the price tags for tuition at the five top-ranked schools averaged $22,000?

New York University, the private school in Greenwich Village, ranked first for its "adventurous spirit" and ultracool attitude from the underground music scene.

Howard University, an HBCU in DC, ranked second as a "fashion incubator" with a "neo-soul" style.
