Chinese Communist Party members need a new image which represents China's "new period" of modernization and development, the Renmin Ribao newspaper has said. Members should properly understand former president Jiang Zemin's "three representations" ideology in order to change their image. Jiang's ideology requires the party to represent modern culture, advanced productive forces or the new class of entrepreneurs as well as a representing the interests of the general population. The paper said members should "assign great importance to emancipating and developing productive forces; take the lead in breaking away from ideas and concepts that hinder development, in transforming practices and rules that fetter development, and in removing defects in our systems that affect development".
