SCHOOLS may ban teachers from attending in-service training coursesduring term because they fear legal action by students over the continued loss of teaching time.
The three managerial bodies are considering recommending this drastic course of actionto more than 730 boards of management because of the steady erosion of the school year.
Such a move would force the Department of Education and Science to organisein-service training at night time, weekends or during holiday periods - and then payteachers to attend.
The three bodies - the ACCS, JMB and IVEA - have submitted a joint paper to thedepartment seeking changes in order to protect the school year for students. They are hoping to meet Education Minister Noel Dempsey about their concerns shortly.
At present most in-service training for syllabus change is organised during term time. Substitute cover is allowed, but schools often cannot get qualified subs.
If no change is forthcoming in time for the new school year, their document says theycannot recommend to boards that they co-operate with the existing model of in-service training.
