(From Irish Independent)
HOSPITAL consultants who will get a big salary increase from the VHI today are threatening to hit patients with demands for extra payments.
The specialists, who earn an annual average of [euro]127,000 for treating private patients, willreceive a 6pc increase from the health insurers.
The rise, an average of [euro]7,620, comes into effect this morning. It is a major factor in pushing up premiums for 1.5 million VHI subscribers.
And some of those subscribers, who face an 8.5pc hike in their premiums, could findthemselves hit on the double.
The consultants are now warning they may have to demand "top-up bills" from insured patients for treatment in private hospitals.
This is because the Government looks set to end the system of subsidising their indemnity against being sued by private patients - leaving some specialists withpremiums of [euro]1,000-a-week.
