(From Irish Independent)

IRISH RESIDENTS (both medical card holders and non-medical cardholders) are entitled to be treated as public patients in our public hospitals, subject tomodest charges.

The current charge for one night as a public patient is [euro]36 per night, up to a maximum of[euro]360 in any twelve consecutive months.

Attendance at accident and emergency departments is subject to a charge of [euro]40 (wherethe patient does not have a referral note from his/her doctor.)

Notwithstanding these entitlements, many people take out extra insurance in order to betreated as a private patient in public hospitals (and in private hospitals depending on their insurance plan.)

Tax deductions are available for these payments. In this way, taxpayers are encouraged by the State to (in effect) pay more tax in the form of these insurance premia.

There are more than 1.5 million Irish people in respect of whom these extra premia are paid. Why?
