TOKYO, July 1 Asia Pulse - A number of Japanese firms, including NEC Corp. (TSE:6701) and Hitachi Ltd. (TSE:6501), will offer on Tuesday personal computer servers powered by Intel Corp.'s new Itanium 2 processor. Mitsubishi Electric Corp. (TSE:6503), Oki Electric Industry Co. (TSE:6703) and Hewlett-Packard Japan Ltd. will also unveil Itanium 2 servers on Tuesday.
By handling data 64 bits at a time instead of 32 bits, the new central processing unit can process data twice as fast and could boost PC performance to the same level as workstations running RISC (reduced instruction set computer) chips that have been used as high-performance servers in many corporate information systems. ...
