Japanese consumers have further tightened their purse strings due to falling wages and rising joblessness amid the prolonged recession, which is pushing down retailers' earnings.
This downtrend deteriorated in the spring, when the Iraq war and severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) threat assaulted industries, including the retail sector.
