SYDNEY, July 1 Asia Pulse - The new head of Australia's competition watchdog Graeme Samuel today said he would not be a soft-touch when it came to dealing with businesses in his new role as chairman of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).
"I am not sure it's a case of getting people onside," he told ABC television.
"Business itself ought to be onside with the principles of the Trade Practices Act if they recognise that Australia and Australian business operates in a very competitive environment and that competition is good for business, that is, able to thrive in a competitive environment.
"Those that will be offside with the ACCC are those that are not prepared to behave responsibly in accordance with the principles of the Act."
Mr Samuel today starts his new role after Allan Fels stood down from the job yesterday after 12 years.
Prof Fels had been the target of criticism by some business leaders, including Harvey Norman Holdings Ltd chief Gerry Harvey who described him as a "smiling assassin", so powerful that he scared politicians.
