SEOUL, July 1 Asia Pulse - South Korea's tourism industry is expanding rapidly after a months-long knockout caused by the deadly severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS).
In recent months, some travel agencies had to tide themselves over the crisis with dirt-cheap tour packages making no sense in terms of profitability. These included one priced at 199,9000 won (US$166) for four-days in Thailand and another at 99,000 won for a four-day trip to the Philippines.
Until the end of May, rumors circulated that the collective collapse of domestic travel agencies would take place in July and August because of the fatal epidemic, coupled with the dampened domestic economy.
But they are now rapidly recovering from the shock of SARS as the disease has been quelled worldwide.
In particular, the World Health Organization's recent lifting of its recommendation not to travel to China, the very source of the disease, greatly restored people's confidence in taking overseas trips.
Ahead of summer vacation, travel agencies are hectic to secure seats on airplanes.
"Except for China, Taiwan and Hong Kong, where SARS is still not completely cleared, it's not easy to find tickets to other areas worldwide. In particular, almost all July flights to Southeast Asian countries have been booked," an official at a travel agency said.
