TAIPEI, July 1 Asia Pulse - The nation's top mainland China policy planner urged local people Monday to avoid immediate travel to the mainland upon the July 4 lifting of a 10-day severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) home quarantine requirement for arrivals from the mainland.
Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) Chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen made the remarks after announcing the lifting of the home quarantine requirement, which she said could lead to a stampede of cross-Taiwan Strait traffic that would overtax the SARS-fighting operations at airports and the country's overall SARS-handling ability.
Tsai also cited David Heymann, executive director of communicable diseases of the World Health Organization, who said that there is enough evidence to show that wild animals in the southeastern province of Guangdong carry the coronavirus that causes SARS.
Tsai expressed the hope that local people and tour operators will not visit the mainland right away, so that the limited airport traffic can be reserved for those who have more urgent need to travel.
