TAIPEI, July 1 Asia Pulse - The World Health Organization (WHO) has promised to post permanent staff members in Taiwan to help with epidemic control and public health promotion, a senior official said Monday.
Su Ih-jen, director of the Center for Disease Control (CDC) under the Department of Health (DOH), said David Heymann, director of the WHO's communicable disease department, made the promise during a just-concluded health ministers meeting under the aegis of the 21-member Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum.
Su, a member of the Taiwan delegation to the APEC ministerial meeting on severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) held in Bangkok June 27-28, said Heymann held several rounds of talks with him and DOH Minister Chen Chien-jen on the sidelines of the APEC event.
"Heymann was satisfied with Taiwan's transparency regarding the SARS outbreak and its prevention and control measures against the atypical pneumonia, " Su said, adding that Heymann pledged to realize the goal of posting permanent WHO experts in Taiwan before he steps down from his current post July 20.
Because of Beijing's opposition, Taiwan has been denied access to the WHO. The Geneva-based world health body didn't respond to Taiwan's request for help with its SARS-fighting campaign until April when the disease had already become prevalent on the island.
