NPA to fully apply profiling techniques
Yomiuri
The National Police Agency plans to fully apply evidence-based criminal profiling techniques to better cope with heinous crimes that are hard to solve with traditional investigation methods.
In the field of behavioral profiling criminal investigation, two approaches have established themselves as global models--the psychology-aided one devised by the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the statistics-based one developed by David Canter, a professor of Liverpool University in England.
Police in Japan will rely on both U.S. and British models with a view to eventually adopting a profiling system of their own, NPA officials said.
In a preliminary application of profiling techniques, the Metropolitan Police Department arrested a man in March last year on suspicion of raping over a five-year period women living alone in areas along the Tokyo-Chiba prefectural border.
