ENERGY shortage influences how designers create modern buildings.
Most modern buildings are designed to reduce electric consumption for air conditioning and lighting. A typical building spends about 60 percent in air-con, 20 percent in lighting and another 20 percent in motors, pumps, elevators and other mechanical system.
There are buildings, however, that exploit the natural daylight.
Architect Amado de Jesus, chair of Green Architecture Movement of the United Architects of the Philippines, said there are progressive building designers who have become advocates of energy and environment.
The Asean Energy Awards, for instance, encourages countries to be more conscious with energy-efficient buildings through a regional competition.
