COMMUNIST rebels could have plotted the assassination of controversial Mayor Joel Brillantes of Monkayo, Compostela Valley, police and military authorities said yesterday.
Brillantes, 48, was shot dead inside a cockpit in Davao City on Saturday night. Police said the lone assassin, identified as Aniceto Dejeto Sr., 33, was a former New People's Army (NPA) rebel, although another report said he was a member of the barangay police.
Shortly after firing on the mayor, the suspect was shot and killed by at least three men.
Witnesses had earlier said that Brillantes' bodyguards killed Dejeto, but his wife Nene and one of his aides denied that they were armed at the time of the incident. Nene said the bodyguards deposited their firearms to security personnel of the Davao Matina Gallera before they were allowed inside the cockpit to watch a five-cock, P2-million derby.
President Macapagal-Arroyo ordered the police to conduct an in-depth investigation of the killing and go after the suspects and the mastermind.
