TWO COMMUNIST rebels were killed during a two-hour firefight with government troops in General Nakar, Quezon on Saturday, military officials said yesterday. Six soldiers were earlier reported wounded in the clash.
After the clash, the troops recovered the bodies of the two rebels, one of whom was identified only as Ka Jonas, an M-16 rifle, military paraphernalia and other anti-government documents, according to Maj. Benjamin Hao of the Army's 2nd Infantry Division. "Our offensive operations in the area will continue as long as NPA (members) (continue to do) terroristic activities,'' said Maj. Gen. Efren Abu, commanding general of the Army's 2nd ID based in Camp Capinpin in Tanay, Rizal.
Troops of the 59th Infantry Battalion encountered some 50 NPA rebels, while conducting operations in Barangay Canaway around 8:30 a.m., triggering a two-hour firefight.
The troops proceeded to the area, after being tipped off that the rebels were massing up at the boundary between General Nakar, Quezon and Bulacan.
The clash came two days after some 200 rebels raided and torched an Army patrol base of the 52nd Infantry Battalion in Oras town, Eastern Samar, killing 11 militiamen, five soldiers and a wife of corporal.
